Instagram image sizes
Instagram stores feed photos 1080 pixels wide. The height depends on the aspect ratio, and anything outside the supported range is cropped by the app itself — usually not where you would like.
| Format | Aspect ratio | Size in pixels |
|---|---|---|
| Portrait post | 4:5 | 1080 × 1350 |
| Portrait post (grid ratio) | 3:4 | 1080 × 1440 |
| Square post | 1:1 | 1080 × 1080 |
| Landscape post | 1.91:1 | 1080 × 566 |
| Story, Reel | 9:16 | 1080 × 1920 |
How to crop a photo for Instagram
- Choose the format above. Portrait 4:5 takes the most space in the feed and is selected by default.
- Open your photo and move the frame to the part you want to keep. The frame is locked to the right proportions.
- Download. The file is scaled to the exact Instagram size, so the app does not crop or recompress it further.
Which format to choose
Portrait 4:5 shows the largest image in the feed and suits people and products. The profile grid shows posts as 3:4 thumbnails, so a 3:4 crop looks the same in the feed and on your profile.
Square 1:1 is the safe choice for carousels where every slide must match. Stories and Reels are full-screen 9:16 — keep text and faces away from the top and bottom edges, where the app places its buttons.
Quality tips
Start from the original photo, not a screenshot. If the area you select is smaller than the target size, CropMe warns you and saves at the crop size instead of silently stretching it; you can enable upscaling if you accept the softer result.
Instagram recompresses everything to JPG. Saving a JPG at high quality, or a PNG for graphics with text, gives the app the best material to start from.
Your images stay on your device
CropMe works in your browser, in a background worker. There is no upload, no server-side storage and no account, and location, camera and date metadata are removed from the file you download.
Frequently asked questions
What size should an Instagram post be?
1080 pixels wide. For a portrait post that is 1080 × 1350 (4:5), for a square post 1080 × 1080, and for a landscape post 1080 × 566.
What size is an Instagram story or Reel?
1080 × 1920 pixels, a 9:16 aspect ratio — the full screen of a phone.
How do I post a vertical photo without Instagram cropping it?
Crop it to 4:5 or 3:4 before uploading. Taller photos are cut by the app; at these ratios the whole image is shown.
Can I crop several photos to the same size for a carousel?
Yes. Keep the same format selected and crop each photo in turn — every file is saved at the same pixel size.
Is it free, and are my photos uploaded?
It is free with no sign-up or watermark. Photos are cropped in your browser and never uploaded.
